Beer Tasting: Ayinger Ur-Weisse

This is my first official beer tasting that I have analyzed.  So please bear with me as this is a completely new experience! Keith and I have each poured ourselves a glass of Ur-Weiss from Ayinger.  We will be visiting this brewery during our trip to Germany and Belgium.  I am getting so excited!

Well, here goes....

Appearance: Large white foamy head that lasts for a long time.  The beer appears hazy and golden brown.

Aroma: My initial reaction to the odor of the beer is that it smells like banana bread.  The yeasty bread smell is quite obvious with some underlying banana scent.

Taste:  The flavor of this beer is reminiscent of bananas which seems to relate to the banana odor that the beer gives off.  There is very little bitterness or saltiness and the beer itself is fairly sweet with a small hint of tartness at the very end.  However, the sweetness is not overpowering or overwhelming.

Overall Impressions:  The Ur-Weisse beer has low to moderate carbonation, and is a light to medium bodied beer.  The aftertaste is fairly balanced but tends to dry out the tongue.  However, I found this beer to be light, balanced and pleasing to the senses. I would definitely like to make a beer like this, and if I couldn't do that, I would definitely buy it again.

Hopefully my tasting abilities improve over the course of this adventure!  This will be important in differentiating the different aromas and flavors present in each of the beers that we taste.  I can't wait to continue this adventures.
